balance problem in a senior jack russell

my jack russell Alf has just turned 14 and a couple of weeks ago displayed all of a sudden a little shakiness of his back legs that caused him to also dip his head at a right angle when walking and wobbling a bit. The vet checked out all his faculties and said it was not a stroke but possibly a strained back - he has ruled out middle ear infection. He still is a little off balance but a bit better this week however his back legs still seem a bit weak - is this common in jack russells and will it pass - what other tests should he have?
