Biting
Jun 30 2006, 7:02 PM EDT Why is it that poodles do that biting/nawing thing? The ones I've encountered love to just lightly naw on your hands and/or forearm... what's up with that? 3 out of 6 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Biting
Sep 18 2006, 2:08 AM EDT I have standard poodles, and have had poodles in my family for generations! My parents raised and showed poodles for years. I haven't known any poodles to do the behavior you are discribing, but I have known dobermans who do this. I would say that it is a way for them to express affection and to get your attention. They are very intelligent dogs, and do try to communicate more with their people than most breeds....actually, dobermans and poodles are very simular in their personality and intelligence. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Nov 10 2006, 3:12 PM EST My toy poodle exhibits this 'biting/mouthing' behaviour. From what I have read on the internet and other dog books, this is a clasic behaviour of all retriever type dogs, i.e. labs, poodles (they were used in duck hunting and fetching/retrieving from water) etc. Sheperd dogs are known to nip at children's feet (herding instinct), retriever dogs love to mouth/bite anything and everything. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: Biting
Nov 20 2006, 12:19 AM EST We have had our toy poodle for over 14 years and he has never bitten anything to speak of, the only thing he has ever done is sniff around someone when they come into the house, usually they have a scent of another animal on them. He is such a good natured dog. I can't believe that it is common for any to bite anything but their own food. He does have medical problems now, but then he is 14 1//2 years old. He is well loved by just about everyone even those who don't have any pets at all and never did. And one thing we do like is that he doesn't bark unless someone comes into the house with out his knowing it. Do you find this valuable? |

Dec 1 2006, 5:44 PM EST I have a standard poodle and he "mouths" me constantly. I say "mouth" because he really doesn't bite at all. It can be annoying, but he is my baby and if that is the worse thing that he does, I can handle it. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Biting
Jul 18 2007, 4:08 AM EDT We have two Poodle boys, miniatures. Had a female, also miniature, who has crossed the rainbow bridge. All three mouth a hand, an arm, fingers when they want attention, especially petting and scratching. We have/had had a Saluki, a Dalmation, a Border Collie mix, a Fox Terrier/Dalmation mix, and a Brittany Spaniel. The Saluki and Border Collie mix have, on a rare occasion, mouthed an arm or hand to get petted or scratched. The others pushed with their heads or muzzles for petting and scratching. All of them, though, have used a paw in a little hitting action for the petting and scratching. Do you find this valuable? |
