Dog shot with a pellet gun
May 24 2009, 12:57 AM EDT
She was the next dog shot with an air pellet-gun from an unknown idiot. She can not move her back legs and the bullet is still inside her body. We brought her to the vet and they said that that the bullet is already about a week inside her body and it is too late to remove it. The doctors told us they can do a rehabilitation until she can gets back to normal. There is a hope. Please help us collect the money for the rehabilitation and the rest of the exams and medications. If you have any suggestions or advise, please email us.to see pictures of the dog and photos of the x-rays and the CT scan go to my site: http://www.saveapet.co.cc/ Do you find this valuable?

How did this go for a week before anybody noticed something was wrong? I know that I wait a few days to see if a limp or something goes away-but this sounds bad-what were the symptoms?

First, God Bless you for taking in a stray. I've done it too...its a BIG responsibility and a BIG job sometimes. It also tugs at your heartstrings when things do not go well. But when they do - it makes it worthwhile. I plan to post some "Happy Ending Stories" when I get some time. One of the things you can also do to make her comfortable is to keep some ice on the area to keep the swelling down. Inflamation will be your biggest enemy along with the infection. Many times Vets have "Stray Funds" set up to help out in situations like this. If this Vet doesnt, call aound and see if you can find one that does. Exactly how much is the Vet wanting to charge for the Rehab? Again, God Bless for stepping up to the plate.. I know the courage it takes to do it... Smile.. its worth it when you finally find a good home for her.

I get so frustrated every single day and it is very emotionally difficult for me but I must not give up. I love animals more than anything. The problem is that in Bulgaria there is no such a thing " Stray Funds" and not many people care about animals. So far we have spend over 300$ for all medications and exams and I must say it will be needed 300$ for the rehab and the rest of the medications not including the wheelchair. She had an infection but after a few shots the vet gave her, now the infection has stopped. For me the biggest concern is who will adopt her because in Bulgaria will be impossible. There are thousands of stray dogs and also it will be difficult for finding home for a dog with disability. I myself have 4 cats in my studio. I worry day and night and I pray that this sad story will turn out with a happy end... Do you find this valuable? |

I would NOT do that. You can easily push it deeper. I would use tweezers (sterilized). You can also pick up some Betadine (generic) from Walmart and some Triple AntiB ointment. Remember, there are MANY vets who will work with you and help you out. Just call around and see if one will see the dog for a reduced rate. I never ask our Vet for that when its one our "Pack" as not to stress out our Vet. We rescued a Lab about 2 months ago out of a ditch.. it was an 8 week old puppy almost dead. The Vet only charged us $35.00 for everything. Just dont be shy about asking when you really need the help. Good luck. Do you find this valuable? |

Being in Bulgaria makes it different in getting help. Unfortunately, we get lots of scams or tricks from people that try to get money from other people, so probably nobody will send you any money. In this state, there isn't hardly any money to help injured dogs. Spinal cord injuries are odd. From what you are saying-it's like the spinal cord was bruised or something and it isn't letting the back legs work. Time should let the spinal cord heal-the bruising go away and the dog could get it's legs back. If you try to push or poke around the spine, it will injure the dog more and the dog will never get use of its legs. Also don't use human medicine like aspirin or Tylenol for pain as that ruins the kidneys. For a wheel chair for the dog- even in Bulgaria you should be able to make one your self for very little money. get some old wheels on an axle-a cart- tricycle-a children's wagon- baby stroller and use metal braces to attach the axle to a board that supports the dog. Pad and cover the board so the dog doesn't get sores from the board. If the dog can't use its legs, it can't go to the bathroom like a regular dog. Fix a harness to the wheel thing and the dog has a wheel chair. With the hard ships that you've had in Bulgaria because of WW II and the Russians ruling your country, I'm sure that you're used to making things by your self, but your sadness about this dog has stopped you from making a wheel chair for the dog.
