Fairy DogParents Helping to Prevent Dogs from being Surrendered
May 26 2009, 7:43 PM EDT
I recently lost my dog Ladybug(my profile photo)- a beautiful mutt we adopted 4 years ago- she was 14 and very sick. We realized how fortunate we were that we could afford her medicines and food. We asked the vet if we could donate her left over medications and food and sponsor another family who had a dog with similar issues or had fallen on hard times and were at risk for having to surrender their dog due to temporary financial strain. When the vet, local rescue leagues, shelters and animal groups all said 'something like that doesn't exist' I decided it should. We started Fairy DogParents.org and are holding our first fundraiser next month - June 27th in Kingston, MA. I just found this site and am curious how to best promote such an event among such a passionate group of dog lovers. Any ideas?

have you tried to see if your area has an adoption-thon with a city/county and petSmart and pet co? You could probably get some free advertising through that. You might want to try to use one of those to become known. My city had one, where they thought that they found homes for over 400 animals-They invited small towns and villages to bring their adoptable animals. 2 weeks after the event- they got complete reports from the villages-they had actually givin away over 600 animals. Petfinder.com works with lots of different groups. Also <oodle.com> is a good source with dogs. I got my dogs through petfinder. Don't enter oodles.com, as oodles is a jaguar dealership in Australia. Good luck-okay

I don't know whether you have ever heard of the Care 2 Petition site but you can become a member of that and spread the word in that way concerning your rescue. There are a lot of animal lovers on the Care 2 petition site and I'm sure they can also spread the word for you so that you can at least help animals in Maine. By the way, we just lost our home to foreclosure last year and had to move out of it in January of this year. I was so worried that we have to give up our animals because of the foreclosure but my brother in law came to our rescue and helped us get another home (which we will pay him back for). I'm so thankful that we had help but there are a lot of other people out there who don't have the help we had and end up giving their beloved animals up to "kill shelters". I wish I had money to start a group like yours here in Pennsylvania because there are a lot of people losing their homes in our state also. God Bless you for your help for animals. What a great idea! I had wondered about this myself when I reasearched an article about rescues filling up as a result of foreclosures. I just posted a quick blog about Fairy DogParents to get the word out. Best of luck, and bless you for your work.View post at: http://www.merchantcircle.com/blogs/Contain-A-Pet.of.Wilmington.910-516-0022 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Thank you all for caring so much. I hope that other members come up with such helpful resources. I lost my dog to homelessness when I was 9. While many people feel that it's more important to help these people-I don't understand why the banks don't allow families to rent their homes-because it would be better than an abandoned home that ends up being vandalized- but each of us in our own way can help prevent the broken heart of a child that loses their beloved dog. I still miss Puddin' Head, a beloved hound that wouldn't allow any stranger touch any child at the city park and shared lunches with the firemen.

Thank you for your advice we did get some offers to post flyers at various shelters & pet stores. I have also sent out press releases to various radio stations and newspapers and have had a good response.

thank you Jerilyn, we are just getting started but the response from people who want to help has been overwhelming. I am very much looking forward to our fundraiser so we have some money to help some dogs families in need.

thank you so much for your support. The day we picked up Ladybugs ashes was the day I picked up the newspaper with a shelter dog on the front that was surrendered due to financial strains. I cried in my car with her urn in my lap and realized someone had to try to do something. I look forward to helping people who really want to keep their dogs but are having tough times. thanks again for spreading the word.
