Epilepsy in the Breed
Jul 15 2006, 2:34 PM EDT My Blue has had epilepsy throughout his life, he is 6 now which is the common age this affliction occurs. Any thoughts about this? 4 out of 5 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Epilepsy in the Breed
Sep 22 2006, 11:24 AM EDT Epilepsy can occur in any or most breeds. Dachshunds are not one of the breeds it is considered extremely common but there are lines that have or may carry it. Is your Dachshund of the blue coloring? (only ask due to the name). If so, he may be prone to other problems just due to being a blue. It is a dilute with many known weaknesses and is not usually a color bred by reputable breeders because of those weaknesses. Many blues are known to have skin problems, allergies, etc. If you have a pedigree on your dog and if he comes from show lines, the epilepsy could possibly be traced to a certain relative. If he is from a pet shop or pet breeder, you probably cannot track the epilepsy down but you definitely do not want to breed your dog! He will just pass the epilepsy along to his offspring. RE: Epilepsy in the Breed
May 14 2007, 3:03 AM EDT My (mini) Sasha had epilepsy beginning at 7 months until I had to say a tearful good-bye to her in the vet's office in 2/07 at the age of 14 years--from alzheimers, not from epilepsy. Phenobarb controlled it, but never cured it. Frequency of seizures varied throughout. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Epilepsy in the Breed
May 14 2007, 3:07 AM EDT (same writer as above) My Sasha was a black and tan, purebred, but from a private home breeder that I had lost the address, so could not attempt to trace. Do you find this valuable? |
