What to feed?
Aug 20 2009, 4:36 PM EDT | Post edited: Aug 20 2009, 4:36 PM EDT
Does anyone here feed their pets Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover’s Soul? We are thinking about feeding Chicken Soup for the Dog Lover’s Soul puppy formula to our 5 month old pup. It’s all natural and made with fresh meats which we really like. Has anyone tried it out with their pups before? What do you guys think? Do you find this valuable?

Well, I feed my hounds Campbell chicken soup when they're down. It's the only way to get Stonewall to eat powdered meds. A diet of chicken soup wouldn't be good-Is there any particular reason for doing this? I shy away from doing something like using chicken soup or whatever daily on a dog. It should be a treat to help get meds into the dog. If the dog has it all of the time-then the dog will stick it's nose up at it and you'll have problems and extra medical expenses. I believe that dry dog food is the best for many reasons. #1 Fiber, #2 less expensive #3 less chance of being poisoned by China-which happened last year #4 Think about how your dog would fare if it got lost and ended up in a shelter of any type-god forbid that you die-but with mourning you, the dog would have to adapt to regular dog food and might become ill or unadoptable because of its eating habits that you created. #5 If you watch the "Dog Whisperer" or "it's the Me or the Dog", you'll notice that many of the problem dogs have special meals-and it starts when the dogs are puppies- if you give it a special treat/meal now- you can't use the special meal/treat to coax it to eat when ill-then how can you tell if your dog is sick or just plain spoiled? If your dog isn't eating well-take it to the vet-check on how much it should be eating and make sure that it doesn't have health problems. Stonewall and Missy sleep on my bed with me-which some people don't like. I tried different dry dog foods until I found something they liked. Don't change food quickly- start mixing the new brand or flavor with the old stuff and gradually switch to the new food- less stomach upset like passing gas. I hope that you take your dog to a trainer to help keep it from being a demon. Remember that a dog is a dog-they have special needs/different from our physical and emotional needs- You wouldn't feed a horse dog food- Do you find this valuable?

If its all natural I think it should be fine as long as your dog doesn't throw it up his food a lot like mine does. (He has stomach problems). It would be pretty gross if you had to clean that up lolz Do you find this valuable?

Sorry for the confusion I was referring to Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's Soul puppy formula not actual chicken soup. Has anyone tried the puppy formula on their dogs? http://www.chickensoupforthepetloverssoul.com/ Do you find this valuable?

Ah, sorry that I mis-read your post. Yes, I've always used puppy food for pups. Lots of the time, I had to lock the mother up to keep her from eating all of it. It was a sign that the mother needed more vitamins, etc. I used pup food until they were 8 months old-some people do that until they are a year or so old. Pups are pups for about 2 years. They will have bone growth after the first year, usually thickening, but there is some height and length growth too. Missy was so large when we got her that the vets thought that she was an adult . We should've realized that she was a puppy because of her physical awkwardness, but we thought it was because she was a wild dog learning to live in a house and yard. She had her last growth this April-May-height and LENGTH. She almost doesn't fit in the extended cab now. So, don't be scared of giving your pup extra suppliments-as recommended by the manufacturer-and finding something nutrious the pup-dog likes to eat. good luck and keep us updated. I'm sure that Missy and Stonewall would give your chicken soup for the soul 3 tail wags of approval-which is their highest rating. Do you find this valuable?

I am sorry that you did not receive any replies that actually answer your question. I have read the bag on CSPLS, and I liked what I read. At that time, though, I opted for the Merrick foods because there was more variety in the flavors. They are mostly natural, and I think it is WAY better than the supermarket brands and the Science Diet. If CSPLS makes you feel comfortable, then I think that is what you have to give your puppy. Just remember to wean him on the new and off the old food in stages of mixing the two. Abruptly changing brands is rough on young stomachs, and he will likely get diarrhea if you switch abruptly.

Hope this helps you, and congrats on your new puppy!
