about "designer" breeds

It is important to keep in mind that every single one of the breeds listed above is NOT a purebred. Disturbingly, somehow the breeders of these poor dogs are handing out "registry papers" or advertising their litters in the paper as registered. THESE DOGS ARE NOT PUREBREDS. The registries some breeders use to get around this are known for intentionally registering mixed breed dogs. They are all about the money, as the large majority of breeders of these dogs are. This fad is a detriment to the overpopulation problem in this nation. People are rushing out to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars (I have seen yorkie/rottie crosses sold for 10K!!!!) on these puppies from "breeders" when they can get the same mix of dog at any shelter for so much less. So many will be euthanized because of the ignorance and greed of some people. The only reason for breeding any dog is to better an established breed, ever. Anything else does nothing but sentence thousands more puppies and adult dogs to death all over the country. 7 out of 9 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree with you completely. I had high hopes for this site until I found that "designer dog breeds" are being promoted on here. There is no excuse for a responsible website to promote this kind of mentality, and it saddens me terribly. Today, our shelter took in a "Puggle" -- an adorable little dog that is simply a mutt, and that someone paid a lot of money for. But to us, it is simply a Pug mix, and it will be adopted out to someone for the same amount as any other dog in our shelter, because that's the way it should be. The creation of "designer breeds" does nothing but devalue all dogs, and that is a crying shame. Anyone who is wondering whether they should spend money on a "designer breed" should first read this article: http://www.canismajor.com/dog/poodogs.html 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

I was the original poster of that comment. I wasn't sure, being a moderator of the site, if I should post with my username or not. I just wanted to let anyone reading know that I plan on alerting more moderators and administrators (if I can find out who they are) to the concern over this page. It does not sit right with me, either.

I think that is ludicrous. Many of us who breed our "designer dogs" as you call them have a genuine love for our pets. I have a wapoo and a purebred chihuahua whom I would give my life for. I get so tired of the people who keep hollering go to the pound and pick up a dog. I don't know how those dogs have been treated, nor what diseases or problems they are going to cause my good natured , purebred dogs that I already have spend thousands of dollars, endless hours and lots of love to make sure they are kept that way. I don't breed to sell simply from people like you. I keep every single dog I breed and that is my perogative. Such negativity of yours should be on a page of SPCA page. We are trying to share information on our loving animals while you are promoting spaying and neutering. Shame on you. On the other hand, I agree with people who carelessly breed dogs just to make a buck. That is the only thing I agree with.
