My thoughts ....

... are over on the Bix page. Along with some links. Trained as a population geneticist, I 'm definitely with the hybrids, i.e. mutts, intentional or accidental. Human, canine, or whatever. The term "designer" is unfortunate. 4  out of 4 found this valuable. Do you?

Takoma,

I am interested in learning more about your genetics background.

I do hear you on the decreasing fitness of purebreds.

Combining existing breeds is fraut with problems also. I do believe however that one must be very careful combining two breeds.

I do worry that shelters are filled with wonderful mixes that need great homes that they deserve as all dogs do. Perhaps those wanting a two-breed mixed pup should check their local shelters and rescue groups before investing at a high price of these intentional hybrids. There are so very many accidental breedings (mismatches) to produce the current crisis now facing our wonderful companion dogs.

I am very much a proponent of ...

Those dedicated who accept and practice medically approved breeding methodology as demonstrated by The Canine Diversity Project .

Both parents should be excellent dogs bred for HEALTH, temperament, and type in that order.

Combining two breed dogs with inherent health weaknesses of both breeds can be contrued as irresponsible just as using unfit breeders of one purebred dog bred irresponsibly. Merely combining two breds does not escape the hereditary faulting, syndromes, and disease problems that a single breed has alone.

I do have a problem with the high charge some breeders of these mixes are getting for their pups... then it's buyer beware. Are some people following the lead of some celebrities on the trendiness for attention?

Buyer beware.... your research before buying a hybrid that the pedigrees of both parents are diverse and healthy.

The demand is obviously there to support the supply of these mixes. But charging prices meeting or in most cases exceeding the price of a single bred purebred?

Just some thoughts on your thoughts. See my comments on your profile page.

Cheers!

You Bix is wonderful! Thank you also for taking the interest and time sharing so many resources with us!

Best regards, Pat
