History
Dec 9 2006, 7:56 AM EST The Short History of the Breed is intriguing for me. I have a schipperke and have doubled the breed name comes from "Little Skpper." My schip hates to get wet. When he walks by a river or on seashore, he tries keeping a distance from the water's edge as much as possible. Most of schipperkes I know hate to get wet either. It's natural I cannot believe the remark telling the schipperke worked as the guard of barges. The remark the name comes from “Little Shepherd” sounds true much. It shapes like a shepherd - if it has a tail. But the character… No herding disposition. I have some chances to see a half dozen to more than a dozen of schipperkes at a time. The only action they are in harmony is to bark. I would like to get more information about the origin of the schipperke. Would you tell me the source of the information? 1 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: History
Apr 24 2007, 6:57 PM EDT i owned a schipperke (rescue) for four years and loved him very much. the name means "little captain" and i have read that they were bred primarily to control the rat population on barges. the belgian sheepdog (a breed i have owned since 1965) and the schipperke had the same provenance. the belgians were then bred up for herding purposes, and the schips bred down for their role as rat controllers. any major dog book can educate you more in the history of the schipperke. if you look at pictures of the belgian and pictures of schips, you can see the resemblances. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: History
May 29 2007, 10:59 AM EDT I'll have to refind my links of info for you. My mom has 3 of these furry babies. Some confusion on the breed comes simply from translation. By labeling them from Belguim is to simplify the real history of the land, The territory has been under the French crown, Spanish crown, and was a major hub of commerce for centuries adding more to the mix of influences. While doing some research I discovered that even today the country has some splits in regards to Walloons, Dutch, French. I agree they love the sound of thier own bark, if one barks or actually any dog barks within miles they will all go on alert barking up a storm. The female we have has the talent of singing along, as long as she hasn't barked herself till no voice. Might depend on the bloodline, but have seen some schipperkes with the need to herd. They might not be to the level of Border Collies, but you can see them running the circles around whatever they decide to herd and close in. Ratters? oh! my! If toy are any sign of the natural skill they have, no rodent stands a chance against these tough little guys. One shake of their head and a spine would be snapped. :( They may be small is stature, but one look at how they carry themselves and you know they are tough and think they ARE big. 2 out of 2 found this valuable.
