Redbone Coonhound Runs and Barks Only at Night
Dec 25 2010, 8:23 PM EST | Post edited: Dec 25 2010, 8:23 PM EST
We have two redbone coonhounds. They are both 8 months old. Only one of them just starting running and barking only at night. He doesn't want to come in when we call him. We have tried everything including walking around the 1 acre yard with him and walking him with a leash outside the yard. He will not even take food or treat offerings while he is like this. Any ideas? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Hi cd, I have some questions but first of all, U R so lucky to have a pair of redbones. I have a Walker and Bluetick that I love dearly, but I'd like a redbone-no I'm not hinting for you to send me one-ha, ha, ha. First of all-all coonhounds were developed to be night hunters-to run predators away from the farm house and crops. Unlike german shepherds and other dogs that only work on a specific job under command, coonhounds are independent workers. Hounds are on duty 24/7. This independence, and being bred to lead people-not follow-makes it hard to train hounds for recall. March 19 is the 4th anniversary of finding mine at a dog pound, and when mine get into a snit, they still won't take a treat from me. The Walker finally began taking snacks from me this year. She would accept something from a child, but not me. She won't take anything from another adult. The male was more corruptible and began taking snacks after about 9 months. So, I do undrstand your problems in training your hounds. Mine can go over an 8 ft. fence-just a thought of what a hound can do-and they do travel several states-like from Ohio to the Carolinas or Tennessee-I have mine micro-chipped. Training- First thing you need to know is is: www.HuntSmart.com and www.billboatmancoinc.com. For Boatman call 1-800-833-4518 24/7. These are hound people with supplies and they have things that you can't get at a local store. Get a catalog from each one. First thing you need are training leads-a 25 ft one and a 50 ft. one, and a whistle. I go to a tennis court, chain and padlock the gates. When the Bluetick is off leash, he goes and checks the gates to see if he can open one. You put a hound on the 25 ft. leash and let it go to the end, walk around, and call it in. If it doesn't respond, you blow the whistle, and pull it in to you, while you're saying it's name, come, and blowing the whistle Make it sit. pet and praise it-offer it a treat. Even if you do this at home, don't turn it loose during a training session. Then when it comes willing-it doesn't fight, when you pull it in-one tug and it comes, go to the 50 ft. leash. I do the same thing. On both leads, I run with them, walk, practice sit-down-stay and heel- do it close-then the next time let them out farther and farther-sit-blah-. When you walk red in the evening, put them on the 25 ft. leash after they do pretty good during the day, and go through this drill. For what it's worth it took a year to teach the Bluetick to "sit" and 2 for him to go "down". I say, "Bed" and they go to my room and jump on my bed. It suits them to lead me. I taught them by jumping up and down like an idiot, waving my arms and screaming. Then I'd run through the house yelling, "Bed, bed, oh, bed!" and I jumped on my bed, rolled on my back and kicked my feet in the air, while I yelled bed. They loved the game. Have you tried running in the yard, yelling their names to get them to come. That might help at night. At night, smells are stronger, and there's less noise from cars. etc., so Red is more aware of animals and scents-even of a mouse. A scent hound has a few million more scent cells than a normal dog. To top that off, other parts of the brain-hearing and seeing parts of the brain turn into scent processing. When this is combined with the ears being covered with the ears, the hound probaly can't hear you. I also found out that dogs are selective in what they hear-much like a much nagged husband. Mine caught a scent in the grass, and were following it. A police car had its siren on and was only about 20 ft. from us. The hounds never looked up, never flinched, they followed whatever laid the scent. Even though Red won't take a snack-Red must know that it's there-don't get mad, praise red for coming, even though you have 3 people helping you to pull Red in-and offer the treat. The wrinkles on the face and neck are called frews and their purpose is to push epiphials-scent particles to that big nose The frews drop down over the eyes, the ears swing over the side of the eyes so the hound becomes almost blind when scenting, besides brain cells turning into scent sensors. This is why so many hounds get lost, as they can't find their way back. This is also a factor in bad recall-why you want to micro chip. When my dogs scent-their lips even flap up and down like little wings to get the scent into their noses. Now my questions-do you have an enclosed tennis court that you can take Red to for recall practice? Also mine can turn door knobs and open the sliding patio door-my vet's Black and Tan can do the same. Is Red intact? That could make a difference if RED goes into heat or smells females in heat-so watch that. Do you do things to entertain the dogs and keep them happy? I use bear scent on a drag for mine to trail and reward them with a piece of hotdog. Also have you tried bits of beef or hotdog for a treat-that helped bring Missy around-remember hounds are considered to be "Stuck up". Also, if you call a hound and it takes a sweep around the place-the house, turns and fetches the other hound-that's normal behavior. Stonewall comes to the door to get in-I open the door-and he trots off to get Missy. When it's bedtime, SW makes a circuit of the doors, trying to check things out. They've run off several home invaders I found a bed roll and personal items in the bushes next to my house. The police don't make it to this area, so I depended on the hounds. When I found the bag and called-they came right out, as the guy had broken into a string of houses and put people in the hospital-most dogs got used to his prescence, then he broke in. Mine were banging against the front door, in the kitchen sink to keep him from going in the kitchen window, at the bay window, etc I wish you luck-if I can help U write Do you find this valuable?

Since you have an acre-I definately would take Red out and tie red up on a 25 ft tie for the last duty night call. I can only imagine trapsing over an acre at midnight, chasing an elusive coonhound, when I want to go to bed. This is from a person that has run barefoot in snow and ice at night to catch my Walker. That I've hopped into cars with strangers to catch the Bluetick that cleared an 8 ft fence. I put REWARD in english and Spanish on their dog tags and the phone number-That when we drive down a street looking for an escapee-people come out-whistle and point where it went. It's been 9 months since the last incidence. Someone stopped us when we were walking and told me they had been worried that the hounds had been run over or something. I wouldn't trade these goofs for anything-but lordy, lordy, lordy- Do you find this valuable?

The rewards-people, even cops, trying to buy them when you go for a walk. People stopping and saying they are beautiful. Cops getting all of the hounds out of shelters and taking them home. The neighbors getting coonhounds too. The pleasant sound of hounds roaring past you to get out back, and then the sound of screaming as somebody tries to get out of the back yard- I threw their bag of cloths over the fence the next am-that's when the fence was 6 ft. Listening to them flapping their ears in the morning. Watching them being so gentle with toddlers and playing with small children. Watching them play. Do you find this valuable?

Thank you so much for all of the information. We love our boys. Their names are Smith & Wesson. Some funny stuff there. We have started walking them and know what you mean about the flapping lips. They sound like baby huey's taking off. We went to TN to pick them up when they were 5 weeks old. Now they are 9 months and weigh 70 lbs. We have taught them to sit and shake and they do know some other commands. They have been together since birth so they love each other but fight like siblings too. We will have to try the training you suggested. Thanks again for your much needed info.

Oh by the way Smith has stopped his rants since I posted this. Guess he chased off whatever it was. Thanks again. Do you find this valuable?
