Owning a Cocker Spaniel
Jan 12 2007, 10:06 PM EST Cocker Spaniels are an excellent breed, but they are not for just anyone. These dogs are so eager to please, extremely affectionate, and very intelligent. They are a great family dog. However, they are considered a high maintenance breed. Belonging to the sporting group, these dogs are active and require plenty of exercise, mental and physical. Their coat can get quite long, and needs brushing daily to avoid matting. They will need to be taken to a groomer periodically, unless the owner prefers to groom at home (GOOD clippers cost about $130, blade prices vary but cost around $30 and will last a while but will need sharpening). Cockers are also prone to ear infections. A number of genetic diseases plague this breed. In our opinion, males and females make excellent pets, we do not prefer one over the other. Males will have the tendency to mark if they are not neutered at an early age. This breed can live a long, happy life of around 10-12 years with proper diet, exercise, vet care, and plenty of LOVE! 8 out of 8 found this valuable. Do you? |
