Shelter Dogs and Rescues

Dear DoggyGal,

Thank you so much for adding this page!

I love mixes but I have many reservations about intentionally breeding two breeds.
My first solo dog was a CockaPoo Rescue about 30 years ago.
Wayyyy back before "designer" breeds.
She was probably one of the sweetest dogs ever was.
Want a nice mix?
Go to shelters.
There are so many deserving dogs who need homes!

I don't see why people are so upset with the new designer dog trend. I know there are alot of dogs in shelters that are not rescued and that is one reason I understand the rant on this issue. I have a designer dog, he is a chiweenie. He is precious and the cutest dog I have ever seen. There are mutts everywhere. They are alot of times healthier than a purebred dog. I don't think this should be such a big deal. People are going to get whatever breed of a dog they want, regardless if it's from a shelter or a breeder. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

you are fortunate your dog is healthy and precious, and he is fortunate to have a loving and caring owner. the big problem with the "designer dog" fad is not so much whether intentional mixes are better than purebreds or plain old mutts, it's that fads quickly get out of control, and when everyone and their brothers get on the bandwagon and start frivolously breeding fantasy breeds, more and more puppies are born than will ever find lifelong homes.

shelters are full -- there are simply not enough homes to go around, why add more for the wrong reasons? if this were being done on a limited and controlled basis it would be one thing, but because it's become a fad and the media is making such a big deal of it, far more dogs are being bred than will ever find homes. this is NOT what responsible breeding is all about; this is the kind of thing that, unfortunately, since most people can't tell the difference, makes all breeders look bad.

for every precious and cute little dog like yours that has a loving home, many others will be bounced around from home to home, and many of them will die. is it worth it to allow a small number of people to have the particular mix they want? please re-think your position and be glad your mixed-breed (and that is what he is) is unique and lovable, don't encourage more of them.
