Puppies and Cats
Mar 9 2006, 3:18 PM EST Do you have any suggestions for succesfully introducing a new puppy to a household with older cats? 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Puppies and Cats
Mar 9 2006, 4:23 PM EST I've heard it's a good idea to introduce them to the house gradually -- keep the puppies in one room for a day or so with the door closed. Let the cats get used to the new scents, then introduce the puppies to the cats with leashes on. Then keep the puppies in the room for a while longer and gradually up the amount of time they spend together -- always supervised at first. Make sure the puppies don't have access to the cats' food (keep it elevated or in another place the pups can't reach). And keep in mind that the cats will likely take a swap at rambunctious pups -- it only takes one scratch to teach them who's boss, though! If you are concerned about cat scratches, be sure to keep the cats claws trimmed. And, of course, make sure all animals have proper vaccianations before they are introduced to one another. Good luck! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: Puppies and Cats
Jul 7 2006, 4:18 PM EDT Fidoliz hit it right on the head! I was going to contribute the same info, but she pretty much covered it... just remember not to push the cats into interaction, let them choose their own speed and level of involvement. Do you find this valuable? |
