Puppy or adult dog

Puppies are adorable but they require literally years of training and socialization, at the end of which, if you're lucky, they become a wonderful adult dog. Adopting an adult dog is a great way to bring a dog into your life without the puppy commitment. They key is to take your time and be clear about what you're looking for in a dog. You don't want to adopt some one else's problems, so you have to prepare to be rational and select a dog that represents what you're looking for -- without falling prey to 'cuteness.' I have done this twice and been pleased to spend years with a happy, loving dog. 3  out of 3 found this valuable. Do you?

I agree. But how do you know when you're adopting an older dog that you're getting a keeper? E.g. old dog, new tricks syndrome. Do you find this valuable?
