RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Apr 11 2007, 11:21 AM EDT My heart goes out to you as I'm dealing with the same thing. Our Buddy would be 7 in June, has his spleen removed a month ago and is at the vet's today. I'm afraid today may be the day we put him down. This hemangiosarcoma is very common in Goldens and Shepherds, though yours and ours are a little younger than most with this disease. Where are you located? We got ours from a breeder in Indiana.I have now heard of SO many people whose goldens have died of this dread disease. They are such wonderful dogs but I am afraid to get another purebred because of the incidence of cancer. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
May 3 2007, 10:01 AM EDT Yes. My 4 yr. Sheltie has undetermined cancer. Bleeding from somewhere. After $2,500 with vets and oncology specialists and still no solution. We may have to put her down in a week or so. I was thinking of a future dog as a Golden but I my research other breeds. Thanks. Livingston Do you find this valuable? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
May 3 2007, 11:21 AM EDT I am really sorry to hear about your sheltie, about Buddy, and the other golden above! Cancer is one of those terrible illnesses that devastates us all, as it shows up in people and our dogs, and there's so little that can be done. Nonetheless, don't underestimate the love and care that you all have given your pets during their time..these will always be special relationships. Is bleeding commonly the first noticeable symptom that you all saw? Do you find this valuable? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Jun 6 2007, 11:14 AM EDT I am so sorry to hear of your loss. We lost our golden on May 19 with lymphoma. She was 9 years old. Our other golden died at age 10 of hemangiosarcoma. We lost a springer spaniel of the same cancer at age 9. I think the average age for goldens is now down to 10 years, which is so sad because they are such sweet dogs. I would have another one in a moment though. Our vet told us to think of how happy they are and what a good home they have while they are with you. I will be thinking of you. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Jun 8 2007, 1:13 AM EDT I am so sorry!! In 2004 our 12-year-old Golden passed away--arthritis in her back leg, old age, and phobia of thunder. We were all terribly miserable for such a long time afterwards. Begin the search for a new puppy as soon as possible, it helps so much. Of course you will never forget him. Praying for you! **eleanor and coconut** [aka toadstool63] Do you find this valuable? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Aug 3 2007, 10:11 PM EDT We just had to put our Ray-baby (black lab) down on July 24th, 2007 for cancer of the spleen. The only symptom she had was not wanting to eat Monday morning (7/23/07) so we scheduled an appointment for Tuesday morning to get a check up. At the appointment we found that she had a tumor the size of a watermelon. The vet said it'd started less than a month before and she would be in a lot of pain and bleeding out in another week. My sister works at the vet's office and our vet only recommends putting a pet to sleep as a last resort. She said that even if we chose surgery and chemo, Raven wouldn't have lasted more than 6 months and would have suffered a lot. All the research I did when we returned home pointed to the same information. I also found that labs are prone to cancer of the spleen when they're middle-aged. Since we consider our pets to be a part of the family like you, we didn't take this lightly. We gave Ray the best day we could. We took her for two walks, let her go swimming in a pond, fed her people food, and had the family pet on her until our appointment scheduled for that night. It's never easy. I'm so sorry for your loss and I'm sorry this is a common problem afflicting such a wonderful breed of dogs. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Aug 8 2007, 8:23 PM EDT My kids and I had to put our golden down today, 8-8-07, also due to cancer of the spleen and a tumor on her heart. Our dear Daisy was the sweetest, most loyal and loving dog. We will miss her deeply. She lived a full and happy life for 12 years. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Sep 12 2007, 6:28 AM EDT Hi Everyone, My constant companion Jericho was diagnosed with cancer of the spleen and died during surgerry with in 18 hours of the diagnosis. He was eight years old. This golden friend was the only dog that asked "what can I do for you?" rather than what can you do for me. He was so unselfish. Jericho was running and playing an hour before he got sick. The first symptom was vomiting, which he had done before, but this time he became so weak and was obviously in pain. I wish they would screen the dogs for these tumors. I just had him to the vet a month before for his "well baby check up" and he was fine. Maybe they should do an xray or ultrasound. But they say it grows quickly.........He died Aug. 26, 2007. Then our 13 year old golden, Dakotah, died 13 days later. She had hip dysplasia, arthritis and nerve loss in her back end. She just stopped eating and drinking after Jericho died. We have lost the only "people" who really liked us. Do you find this valuable? |

Sep 14 2007, 8:33 PM EDT "Hi Everyone,I am so sorry for your loss and am still grieving over Bernard, my only comfort is knowing that we didn't let him suffer as the vet told me he would bleed to death from the tumor in the spleen, he was just bleeding a little from his nose when we brought him in and last week his sister was found by her owner in a pool of blood from the same tumor. I wouldn't be able to get that picture of him out of my mind. We had him almost 14 years and anyone who has loved and been loved by a Golden knows how very special that is Do you find this valuable? |

Sep 30 2007, 12:33 PM EDT I am so sad reading this thread - I had to put Scooter down last night - 8 years old and in perfect health up until the last week. It was hemangiosarcoma. It must be epidemic in Goldens.... Do you find this valuable? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Oct 7 2007, 7:21 PM EDT Google Wikipedia Hemangiosarcoma-HSA. Our Golden was 12 and died suddenly last night of the same thing as you..HSA of the spleen. He played all day and then just collapsed that evening before bed. He was panting and we took him to the 24 hour vet. 15 minutes later he haad died.....we had no idea. He was so good on the outside. Vet said this can happen very aggressively....even days. Jake collapsed that eve. bc his spleen ruptored due to the vascular tumor. When it ruptored blood got into his abdomen cavity and then he stopped breathing....HSA is devastating and there is no reverse. One day the Dog is great-the next day he is gone. :( 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Oct 10 2007, 3:54 PM EDT I guess in the big picture of things it is good for out beloved golden friends that it happens fast and they don't have the suffering, for us it is quick and shocking and unexpected or not our pain and grieving is still tremendous so better for them that the suffering was minimal. I am the person who lost Bernard on August 11th, We will always miss him and he will always be our number one but we rescued a 5 year old golden and are getting an 8 week old tonight, it is a tribute to Bernard for all the joy he brought into our lives, God Bless Do you find this valuable? |

Golden was diagnosed with Cancer of the stomach and spleen. It came as a shock to all of us. It pained us to see her vomit and in obvious pain. She was the most loving and lovable dog. The next day, we brought her to the vet to be put down. As she lay on the vet's table, Bubbles looked at me as if to say " please help me..I'm in pain ". After cradling her in my arms and saying over and over again " I love you very much, Bubbles " the vet administered the lethal shot. I was devastated by the loss, and could not choke back my tears. To this day, that moment of separation is seared in my mind. I have thought of getting a replacement dog, but my wife is against the idea....which makes it doubly worse for me. I really hope there is a doggie heaven where I can be re-united with Bubbles some day. I cannot accept that she is gone forever. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Oct 16 2007, 6:31 PM EDT I believe there is a heaven where the spirits of all that have shared this special love will be reunited. Bernard is my FOREVER DOG and I will always love and miss him, but getting a new one and in our case two new ones is the healthiest thing I have ever done in my life, normally I would dwell and sulk for years but I myself was very ill last year and I know time is too precious to spend in sadness, so with the 2 new ones I find laughter again and sometimes I even get to see my Bernard again through a simple look or expression . RE: CANCER IN GOLDENS
Oct 26 2007, 5:26 PM EDT I just put my beloved 9 yo golden down today due to a tumor in his spleen that had also spread to his heart. No symptoms until 2 days ago when he seemed weak and not eating. I took him today, fearing the worst. Sure enough, the vet said the tumor had ruptured and he was bleeding out. I had no choice but to put him down. We are so very sad. My 5 yo daughter is devastated :((( It happened so fast. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |
