jphits-I understand what you're saying since Camillie is 13 and surgery might ruin her quality of life. Rumby was very sick the 2 days after his surgery BUT he also couldn't walk and wasn't eating for days before we did the surgery. His lab work was horrible. It sounds like to me that Camille would make the surgery. Now, the spot on the liver is something to be concerned about since the vet can't take out the liver. When Rumby was in surgery, we had agreed that if the mass was on his liver then we would just put him down. It was only contained to the spleen, so he continued with the surgery. There's a lady named Debbie that has posted above this and talked to me during my time with Rumby- she did the surgery and it gave her doggie 7 extra weeks. She said she didn't regret the surgery and it just made their weeks together even more special. She later put her pup down when it spread to another organ that couldn't be operated on. I guess I was semi-selfish with Rumby- he was only 7, so I wanted him around as much as possible so I did the surgery. I still don't regret the surgery, either. It sounds like the mass hasn't advance much and isn't life threatening to Camille yet- that's great!! I guess you could wait a little longer (only a few days) and see if this mass is fast growing and she starts slowing down. But, at the same time, you don't want to wait too long b/c surgery is best when Camille is full strength. Keep me posted...I want to support you in this. It's a very emotional rollercoaster and sometimes you won't think straight! Erin Do you find this valuable? |

Last Wednesday Camille had her spleen, and part of her liver removed. She is doing very well now and seems to be in good spirits. I am glad I went through the surgery. I am not sure if she has cancer yet, but atleast we got the tumor out that was likely to rupture. The surgeon said that the tumor was about 10cm, so it needed to come out fast. As I was talking to the doctors about surgey, I was questioning if she would be able to handle it (being 13 years old), They expressed that age was not as big of an issue as we may think. Dogs seem to heal well with abdominal surgery, and she is. I know this may not buy me very much time with her, but it will be more time then if the tumor was still in her. I also know her quality of life is a lot better. If anyone is questioning surgery, I would do it. It worked in our case, even when the odds were against us... Erin, Thank you for all of the support and the advice, this message board really helped me, I hope others can benefit from it aswell.

You are more than welcome! Rumby's tumor was huge and had ruptured a few times. I didn't find that out until they took it out, though. I'm so glad you did the surgery. Enjoy every minute you have with her, even if wasn't cancer because you just never know what her body will do now.

My golden retriever Sadie, had to be put to sleep yesterday. Although she did remarkably well on steroids, the cancer got to her. She lost the use of her front legs and developed an issue in her abdomen which would have led to blockage. I am glad that I had a few really good weeks with her before she died. Vicki,I'm so sorry for your loss. I know Sadie was special you, so don't feel bad about being upset over her. She was more than a dog to you! At least you know that she went in peace and just fell asleep. If I would have known that Rumby was going to suffer so much, I would have put him down too. But, I had to give him a chance to survive. Hang in there...it slowly gets better with time. Erin Do you find this valuable? |

Erin,Thanks so much for your kind words. My heart is broken. Sadie will be missed. She was a dear companion. I will always remember the good times I had with her. Much more research is needed for dogs and cancer. Sadie was taken much too young. Vicki Do you find this valuable? |
