My puppy, Buddy, is a good dog, except when he walks on a leash.Every time we start walking he pulls. He also puts the leash in his mouth and pulls. When I try to get the leash out of his mouth and settle him down, he growls. Help! 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

my dog was a terrible puller but i put him on a gentle leader and he is now fantastic and our walks are sooooo enjoyable now that its not one big fight. The gentle leaders are the dog equivalent to a horses bridle (without the bit in the mouth though) they also work on the same principle, where ever the head goes the body will follow. They hate them at first but as long as you dont give up they will get use to them. I strongly recommend you trying one of these Do you find this valuable?

The first person who replied to your plea for help recommended the gentle leader. I must strongly disagree. Gentle leaders are not gentle at all and can be quite dangerous. They work by pulling the dog's head down and to the side. A strong lunger who isn't deterred by the discomfort caused by this horrible product could actually sprain or even break his neck due to the action of this product. In addition, most dogs simply hate it. It fits across one of the most sensitive areas of a dog's anatomy and can create friction burns on his/her muzzle. Finally, it doesn't train your dog. If you go back to a collar or harness, he'll just pull again. I recommend the fabulous products offered by a little company called Larz Pet Gear. You can only get their products on-line at www.larzpetgear.com. They sell these shockcord leashes and special harnesses that have changed my life and my dog's life - literally. The leash has a stretchy part so that when my dog pulls, it pulls him back to me. After using it about three times, he just stopped pulling altogether. He's happier, I'm happier. Try it!

Your best bet is to probably find a professional trainer to help you change your dog's behavior. Some devices may help a little or a lot, but the person who posted about not using the gentle leader is right that these devices don't actually teach your dog anything. They just make it more uncomfortable to pull while wearing it.

Getting the dog to focus on you will keep him from trying to grab the leash and take you for a walk!

Good luck!
