My vet said we should have our 7 1/2 mnth old hips xrayd before we breed him. Is this really necessary? 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

From what I understand this is a good idea to do before you breed your dog. Hip dysplasia is a typical problem with many breeds, Golden Retrievers being one. I think if X-rayed before a year old, the dogs aren't fully mature yet, and although it's possible to determine if there is a problem at this age, a screening later on, like at 2 years old, would be even better. All in all, I think your vet is giving you good advice.

When I was looking for the right puppy, I was very concerned about potential health issues and any evidence of health screening would've been a big plus for me.

Thanks for your help. Talking to other owners is a big help since Ive never owned a Golden before. I plan on waiting til he's over a year old. Do you find this valuable?
