RE: Mini Pin with epilepsy
Jul 4 2007, 12:32 AM EDT Not really that rare....more scary than it is dangerous. My 6 year old MinPin Caesar has had 4 or 5 seizures over the years starting when he was about 2. The first one I was terrified...rushed him to the vet. Vet advised that if it happened again just keep the animal calm and try to keep him from hurting himself. Most all will pass with no damage but if it goes on beyond ten minutes the dog should be brought in for a tranquilizer. You have to understand the nature of epilepsy...it is like an electrical storm in the brain when a group of cells starts randomly firing off signals to muscles and parts of the body for no reason at all...hence the twitching and convulsive behavior. Suggest you google 'canine epilepsy'...I think you will be reassured that it is not nearly as bad as it appears and very few cases are fatal unless it starts occurring too frequently and the animal is suffering from repeated attacks. Ten minutes after Caesar's seisures he was playing as it nothing had happened (and wondering why I had turned white...LOL) Check Caesar's website: http://hometown.aol.com/woodbear99/myhomepage/dogCaesar.html Woody Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Mini Pin with epilepsy
Jul 18 2007, 10:59 PM EDT My Mini Pin started seizing at 3 years old, he averaged 3 to 5 episodes a year. We took him to several specialist, tried to figure out what triggered them. I even video taped one of his episodes and showed it to the vet. After $1500.00 they never figured out what causes them. I still panic when he stiffen up his legs colapes and his head shakes violently and his eyes have a blank stare. I have however, noticed if I remain calm he will respond to my voice moving his ears like he knows I am there. We just scoop him up in our arms and talk calmly to him until it passes. Vet said if it last longer than 10 minutes to bring him in, they would give him Valium and a script to use should he develope worse episodes in the future. One good thing, now that he is 8 years old his seizures have reduced to an average of 1 per year. We are not sure, but have thought his episodes seemed more frequent at Christmas and Easter time maybe it was related to the amount of Sugar handouts when my kids were younger & had access to more cookies and candies. Also think stress, & overexcitment are triggers. Two weeks ago I was working in the yard and hot temps seemed to trigger his first seizure of 2007. He is like a cat and loves lazin the sunlight both indoors and out. Hope this helps, some. Do you find this valuable? |

RE: Mini Pin with epilepsy
Mar 10 2008, 11:55 AM EDT its so sad isnt it?? its terribly frightening and you literally cant5 do anything but wait it out and keep the dog as calm as possible. i dont have a min pin (yet.. soon though)- but my parents dog (a shepherd rot mix) starting getting seizures a couple of years ago. its so horrible. shes a 90 pound dog too so it takes all of us to keep her down. as always, lots of money spent on lack of diagnosis and meds that seem to stop working after a few months.. :( Do you find this valuable? |
