lemon walker coonhound roams for miles--need help!
Jun 6 2007, 3:44 PM EDT Daisy showed up at my house 7 months ago tired and with heartworms. After treatment and rehabilitation she is healthy, sweet and I love her alot. She has started hunting when I take her for walks and she doesn't come home. I either find her or someone finds her MILES from my house. She does not come when called when she is hunting. I am very concerned for her safety and am seriously considering trying to find her another home. Any advise? 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 10 2007, 9:58 AM EDT I have a Walker named Billy and I have found that they must be on a leash and supervised at all times. I have also had that problem because once they get a scent they are off and running. 3 out of 3 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jun 26 2007, 10:54 AM EDT Hi Susan, I bought an attachment for my bicycle that enables my Walker to be attached and run along beside me. It makes such a difference in his behavior to get him running vs. walking. He is also mellowing with age (he is now 4). Good luck! 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: lemon walker coonhound roams for miles--need help!
Aug 6 2007, 11:44 AM EDT My advice to you is to NOT let the dog off the leash. My walker hound does the same thing. Once he was lost for 3 weeks. They will wander. That's how I found him Up North, in Michigan. They are wonderful animals but they will roam if given the chance. So I say don't let the dog off the leash if you don't want to lose him. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: lemon walker coonhound roams for miles--need help!
Sep 28 2007, 2:45 PM EDT Susan These dogs are bred for hunting, Allthough they are boon companions, they make poor pets due to their enate hunting instinct. once she has a scent he will literally travel for miles duringb the chase. The only way top stop the chase once it is on is to kill or capture what it is she is hunting. In a four hour time trial one of our hounds crossed three counties and covered over one hundred miles. The way we locate our hounds is with an expensive tracking device. My advice is to keep her in a large pin six feet tall with a concrete or wire floor and walk her on a leash daily or I like the bicycle idea. Make sure she has a collar on whith all your info in cluding a web address for Daisy. Goodluck. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: lemon walker coonhound roams for miles--need help!
Apr 29 2008, 2:34 PM EDT Hi everyone, I wanted to give an update on Daisy and thank everyone for their advise. We bought a tracking collar and use it whenever we let Daisy loose which is not very often. The last time she ran she almost got out of range of the tracking device, maybe 6 miles. We walk her on a leash about 45 minutes twice a day and she seems pretty content most of the time. She has got to be one of the calmest, sweetest dogs I have ever owned but what a challenge! As Cesar Milan, the dog whisperer, says "Every dog comes to you for a reason" . I just haven't figure out what that reason is yet! Thanks again, Susan Do you find this valuable? |
