Aug 17 2007, 4:08 PM EDT I have 2 Great danes and they are the best dogs I have ever had with children. Children tug and pull on them all the time. The american breed of great danes have a tendency to be more aggressive. The original German Breeds are the best to have. The Great Dane breed is called the gentle giant and I have found this to be true. Scott Tilley 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Feb 11 2008, 11:03 AM EST I am owned by 2 Great Danes, and they are the gentlest dogs that I have ever owned. My grandson climbs all over them, and they never react at all. You are judging a whole breed by what one dog did. Punish the deed, not the breed!!! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: great danes are awsome with kids?
Aug 25 2008, 7:34 AM EDT That's not good! I hope the little girl is okay! I guess that a dog's behavior reflects the way that the owner has trained it. All dogs are nice until trained otherwise. I used to think that all pitbuls were mean, but then I met my friend's pitbul. She was so sweet. It was then that I realized it depends on how you treat and teach your dog. If you are mean to a dog, all the dog learns to do is be mean itself. I personally think that it is all in the training of an animal. Hope this thread and my opinion helps! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: great danes are awsome with kids?
Aug 28 2008, 5:04 PM EDT I have a Great Dane living with me right now. She is a 7 month old female blue. She is pretty agressive and definitely needs training. I will say this: she understands size differential in dogs - we have a golden retriever who she gets rough with, but with my chihuahua and with my JRT she seems to know her limits. I think that as a whole the great danes are a good breed. They are often euthanized quickly in the shelters as no one wants to take such a large dog. They make great guard dogs as no one wants to go up against such a large animal. My personal opinion is that with all dogs you're better off being able to establish structure in your home (i.e. the human as the leader of the pack). When it's a larger breed if you are unable to establish this it can become dangerous if you have a dog that is unbalanced in some way. I'd have to say that the Dane that bit the little girl is a big exception to the way I've seen this breed interact with children - I think that Dane's are overall a good breed with kids AND smaller animals and make a great family pet - they WILL however insist on curling up besides you on the couch as they believe they are the size of a poodle.
