I have a chocolate and white Coolie and when she was 6 months old the white part on her started turning merle. Has anyone had this to happen to them?

What you are seeing is the ticking gene. Some people may get this confused with merle and think it is the merle pattern when it's not merle - it's the ticking gene. The ticking gene usually starts to color around 3 weeks of age in the Australian Cattledog (ACD) and Australian Stumpy Tail Cattledog (ASTCD). Ticking on the collar and legs usually indicates the dog is crossed with the ACD or ASTCD, although; ticking can be found in any breed of dog -- Border Collie to name one.

Thanks. I've heard that dogs can carry merle. What if she is carrying merle?

Hi Grant,
First the merle gene is NOT carried -- a dog is either a merle or it's not. Dogs can be cryptic merles, this is rare in colors other than yellow (e/e red-yellow) and sable. Most sable and yellow color can mask the merle color --- they are still merles NOT carriers.

Don't be confused by what you read on some Coolie breeders website where they've bred two solids and produced merles --- so, then they say that one must be "carrying the merle gene". This is not genetically possible and given that person's history of litters being sired by multiple sires, more than likely that litter where the merles were produced, there was another sire that bred that female (other than the one she says did). This has been proven by Dr. Clark, at Texas A&M University College of Veterinarian Medicine - http://www.pnas.org/cgi/content/abstract/0506940103v1

It's unlikely that your dog is a merle, but more likely just ticked. Please forward to me a picture showing both sides and front and I can tell you more. Also, enclose information about her parent's color.

Grant, also there is a DNA test available that tests for the merle gene. This test is available to anyone, no matter where you live (I assume you live in Australia - it's available to you, also), through the TX A&M University College of Veterinarian Medicine - Dr. Murphy's Lab. You can contact Dr. Clark and she will advise cost and how to obtain the kit necessary to test your dog.

I've been looking on the internet and there seems to be some information out there about the Coolie. The information ranges from one side of the scale to the other as far as color and genetics. This page is the most correct one that I've found. Thanks for your help.
