Why are you feeding him nuts? This is not a good diet for a Shih Tzu. The need to have a balanced diet. I feed mine Royal Canin.
Dog Food For Adult Shih Tzus Over 10 Months of Age Shih tzu 24 formula. This food is GREAT! helps the coat become very shiny and glossy, eliminates dry skin, and my dogs LOVE IT. I would ask your vet about eating the poop. That is not good. Your dog could be lacking nutrients and that is why he is doing that. Check w/your vet and get him on a good dog food. I have also found water bottles to be helpful over bowls of water. My Tzu's get their beards and faces all wet in the bowl and it starts stinking right away. USing the water bottles with the silver spiket (like for rabbits) is great b/c they dont get all wet and smelly in the face area. Good luck! 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

OMG .. nuts for a 9 wk old puppy is not good ... he should be on a puppy food for at least a year ... but as far as eating their poop ... there are many theories as to why ... but most of the time they will grow out of it. My 14 year old shih-tzu never did ... but my two females did until they turned a year. Please get a book or read on the internet on what to feed a small dog at 9 weeks old.

I've bred ShihTzu's and this is normal. You can buy brewer's yeast at the GNC or Pet store and mix in his food. Also wheat germ oil or a spoon ful of canola oil is good for their skin. A lot of Shihtzus have skin issues - keeping the skin moisturized is key. Most puppies outgrown the poop issue- don't feed him a lot of people food -you'll end up with dental issues or getting teeth cleaned every year. Dry food is the best mixed with a small can I actually get Fancy Feast liver and chicken to mix. Greatess advice - get a dog crate and a water bottle for the crate. Keep the crate door open and he can go in and out. Mine would drink from the bottle and sleep in the crate. (you can close door at night) They actually feel safe and you'll be able to come and go without worrying about accidents. You've just acquired your best friend, no one will love you more Good luck 3 out of 4 found this valuable. Do you? |

Check with your vet there is something they carry you can give your dog so when he/she has a bowel they will not want to eat poo due to taste from what is in it. Also, I have personal experience from family members that have had Shih Tzu's that if you buy meat tenderizer and put on the dog's food, "just a small amount" there is something in that also that will prevent from eating poo desire. Check with the vet first Please.

Isnt giving a dog cat food such as Fancy Feast Liver bad for the dog's digestive system? I only give my Shih Tzu dry food such as Natural Choice. I have noticed that when she poops, it has a good consistantcy. What not to do is to give it people food. It is then when she gets diharrea.

My vet recommende canned pumpkin for firming up the stool. Just add about a tablespoon or two to dry food and mix it in really well. It adds fiber and hardens up the stool, and helps the digestion. You should definitely NOT be feeding your dog nuts. Good luck.

I have a female 1 year old Shih tzu. Got her at 10 weeks and she, too, would eat her feaces. She will still do is on occasion when I'm not watching. I think she is growing out of it now. I got "Forbib Anticopraghagic" from the vet and you put some on their food. It makes their stool taste very bad and this is what started to help. You should never give your puppy or grown dog nuts, corn, etc these things do not turn into feaces and that's what attracts them to eat their poops. The other thing that has helped, we get her poop up the second she does it and keep the area very clean. When we walk her, if she tries to eat from another dog feaces, I give the chain a jerk and pull her away.
