My shih-tzu does the same thing. The vet said that she has allergery's just like you or I could have. Instead of iching their nose, they chew on their paws. If he chews on them so much that they become inflammed, my vet said that you can give them half of a benadryl. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

Allergies ... wipe off feet after they come inside ... get an dropper from vet and ask how much Benadryl you should give. All keep ears clean as allergies will bother them as well. Good luck with your new furbabie. 1  out of 2 found this valuable. Do you?

these dogs are also picky about being groomed, if he is still biting at his paws take a small pair of scissors and cut the hair in between his toes or have your groomer do it , that will usually help 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Mine was licking at his paws so much they turned yellow. I changed his food to a better brand and he's doing much better. Look for some of the terrible stuff most of the food at Petco and other chain stores has in it. You can do some research online and find better foods that will have your dog functioning normally. The best one I've found is Enova (it's a bit pricey, I use Natural Balance, little cheaper and almost as good). Foods like Alpo, Science Diet and Pedigree have animal by-products, harmful preservatives and corn, all of which can throw your dogs system out of whack. Some dogs can't tolerate wheat either. 0  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Please dont try to cut the hair with scissors yourself, go have a groomer properly do it. You could cut the dog pretty badly.

Shih Tzu’s often have food allergies, and paw chewing is the number one symptom of that. The only way to truly find out is to talk to your vet. He or she will want you go to on a hypoallergenic diet for about 90 days. Within that time, you can slip up and give them treats or people food b/c you will be back to day one again.

In general, try getting rid of all beef, chicken, wheat (gluten), and corn products. Be sure you read ingredients--lots of products say that they are lamb and rice but are filled with chicken/beef byproducts. Stay away from rawhide--which is beef, instead try nylla(?)-bones--duck or veggie flavored. The gamer meats tend to me less disruptive. Hope this helps......mine's paw chewing has noticeably decreased since I took out the list of items in the first line of this paragraph.
As for the expense…4lbs of dog food last me three months, so it’s not really a problem ;)
