Duke, not doing well in the shelter
Oct 17 2007, 2:18 PM EDT
I am the manager of a shelter in CT and we recently had a treeing walker come to the shelter to be placed. He is not doing well though. He is a wonderful dog and gets along with other dogs, and loves people, but he does not stop barking! From the time I come in, in the morning, til the time I leave at night he's barking his head off. I don't have any experience with the breed, so does anyone have ideas to quiet him down?

I have a treeing walker that just turned two years old. I have had him since he was 9-10 weeks. And I know EXACTLY what you are going through with the constant barking. When I first got Zayne he used to bark NON STOP. And living in an apartment this did not make my neighbors happy. He is a very loving dog...but he definitly has his own personality. People gave me all kinds of advise on what to do to stop the barking...including spraying him with a water bottle (which I gave up because he would just drink the water I was spraying at him.) After sending him to training I learned that it is stricktly for attention. Treeing walkers are extremely smart and I noticed that as soon as I left (or at least he thought I did) the barking stopped. As long as you are sure that the dogs needs are all met...the best thing to do is to ignore the barking. Eventually they will learn that it isn't going to get them attention and will only bark when they actually need something. You can see him at spaces.msn.com/members/rudyslife

That's what they do- bark. We have 2 hounds & they're very sweet & cute & people always think they want a hound pup, but I always tell them how difficult it is to have them as pets- THEY AREN'T LABS!!!

My TTW responds to music. Her favorite is country music. Sounds funny, but it works. The doggie day care that I take her to plays country music or she will bay all day.
